Chapter 17
Peace Restored
Andy collapses onto her bed, breathing heavily. Her room is a mess, but the immediate danger has passed. The TV screen now shows a peaceful scene from the cartoon, as if nothing had happened.
Andy’s breath came in ragged gasps, each one a tiny victory against the lingering terror that had gripped her room just moments before. She collapsed onto her bed, the soft mattress a welcome, solid contrast to the vibrating, chaotic energy that had filled the air. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird desperate for escape. Dust motes, disturbed by the recent mayhem, danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the drawn curtains, illuminating a scene of utter disarray. A lamp lay on its side, its shade askew. Cushions were scattered like fallen leaves after a storm. A half-eaten bag of popcorn lay spilled across the rug, its buttery scent now a faint, melancholy reminder of simpler times.
But the immediate danger, the palpable, slithering, giggling menace, was gone. The television screen, which had been the gaping maw of their escape, now displayed a scene of serene normality. Pinky, her usual cheerful pink square self, was happily watering a flower with a watering can shaped like a cloud. Crystal Lizard, looking as perky as ever, was doing a little jig beside it, and Snakey, his scales a vibrant emerald, was basking in the sun, a contented smile on his face. It was as if the last hour, the terrifying hour when her beloved cartoon characters had turned into monstrous invaders, had never happened. The show was back to its regular, delightful programming, completely oblivious to the near-disaster it had spawned.
Andy squeezed her eyes shut, trying to push away the images of their twisted grins, the chilling whisper of “are you alone?” echoing in the silence. She could still feel the phantom touch of Snakey’s rough scales against her arm, the unsettlingly vacant stare of Pinky’s square eyes. It had been a close call. A terrifying, heart-stoppingly close call. She’d used everything she knew about the show, every silly catchphrase, every character quirk, every nonsensical plot point, to fight them off. She’d tricked Pinky with a promise of an endless supply of rainbow sprinkles, lured Snakey into a game of “pin the tail on the… well, anything!” and even managed to confuse Crystal Lizard with a riddle that involved the proper way to fold a sock.
