The flickering glow of the television screen painted Andy’s room in strange, shifting colors. Outside, the night was quiet, but inside, a different kind of silence had fallen, heavy and charged. Pinky, the pink square with eyes that now held a gleam far too sharp for comfort, and Snakey, the serpentine creature whose usual cheerful wiggle had turned into a menacing slither, stood on Andy’s rug. Crystal Lizard, a blur of emerald scales and wide, unblinking eyes, bounced erratically near the bookshelf. They were out. Really, truly out. Andy’s heart hammered against her ribs like a frantic bird trapped in a cage.

She’d tried everything she could think of, drawing on her encyclopedic knowledge of “Pinkys the Pink Square.” The glitter bomb had been a valiant effort, scattering iridescent dust everywhere, but Crystal Lizard had simply licked it up with a delighted, “Ooh, sparkly sunshine!” Snakey had hissed something about allergies, and Pinky had just giggled, a sound that now sent shivers down Andy’s spine. And Crystal Lizard, bless his distractible little heart, had spent a good five minutes chasing a dust bunny under the bed, completely oblivious to the growing tension.

Andy huddled behind her desk, her mind racing. How could she get them back? They’d emerged from the TV, and the TV was their home. That had to be the key. But they weren’t exactly lining up to jump back in. They seemed to be enjoying their newfound freedom, their sinister grins widening with every panicked movement Andy made.
