Chapter 13 — What the Mortal Witch Remembers

Lyra wakes to find her cuts healing faster but her voice still costing blood. She and Elias discover the glowing fragment left on the basalt shelf where Morwen fell—a piece of the sea witch's power, shed during the Unbinding. Elias retrieves it and realizes it's a memory pearl containing Elara Vance's final human memory: the night she jumped from the cliff after being betrayed by Aldric. They learn Morwen's curse is sustained not just by silence but by the original act of betrayal; breaking it fully requires confronting the source. Meanwhile, Elara Vance drags herself ashore at a cove south of Thorne Point, mortal, drowning in four centuries of returned sensation and memory. She is found by Celia—Robert Ashford's daughter, still alive, still cursed, drawn to the shore by instinct. Celia recognizes something in the broken woman. Lyra, resting at the lighthouse, begins humming and discovers fragments of song returning without pain—but only melody, never words. The words still cost. Elias receives a signal from the old supply boat route: someone has lit a distress fire at Widow's Cove. He and Lyra prepare to investigate, unaware that Celia and a newly mortal, desperate Elara are waiting there—and that the tenant, no longer guarding the trench, has begun drifting toward the same point with unknown intent.

She sat up slowly. The coat slid to the floor. Her bandaged hands throbbed with a steady, rhythmic pulse that matched her heartbeat, which meant the wounds were alive and communicating, which was either healing or infection, and she lacked the medical expertise to determine which.
