Chapter 10
Chapter 10 — The Name Before the Name
Lyra and Elias return to Thorne Point lighthouse aboard the Merrow after the Unbinding ritual at the Abyssal Trench. Lyra's voice is slowly returning in fragments, but the curse is not fully broken—Morwen still holds power and follows them north. Lyra shares her dream vision of Morwen's human origin: a young woman destroyed by a man's words who jumped from a cliff into the sea. They realize they need Morwen's true name—the one she had before becoming the sea witch—to complete the breaking of the curse. Elias searches Maren Thorne's extensive records for references to the woman from the cliff and discovers a partial account of a woman named Elara Vance, who disappeared from a coastal village in 1623 after a public humiliation by a man named Aldric Holt. Meanwhile, Morwen, though diminished, begins a new assault: she targets Elias through his guilt over the Eleanor Grey disaster, appearing to him in the lighthouse and showing him visions of the crew he couldn't save, trying to fracture his resolve so he'll abandon Lyra. Lyra interrupts the vision and pulls Elias back, strengthening their bond. The chapter ends with Elias finding a second, hidden passage in Maren Thorne's journal that suggests Elara didn't jump voluntarily—she was pushed—and that the man responsible may have been connected to a family that later became lighthouse keepers at Thorne Point.
The thing about surviving a supernatural ordeal at sea is that nobody throws you a parade afterward. There's no certificate, no commemorative plaque, no small trophy with a bas-relief of a tentacle on it that you can put on your mantel beside the photos of your children who don't exist because you live alone in a lighthouse and your primary relationship is with a cursed siren who communicates mostly through frowns and handwritten notes. What there is, after surviving, is the long boat ride home during which you have approximately eleven hours to think about everything that happened and several more hours to desperately wish you hadn't.
The Merrow churned north.
Elias kept the engine at a steady three-quarter throttle, which was the setting that balanced fuel consumption against the urgent desire to be anywhere other than the open ocean where the Abyssal Trench had recently tried to eat them. The dawn had arrived without enthusiasm—a gray, halfhearted affair that painted the water in shades of pewter and the sky in shades of nothing. Lyra sat on the bench seat, wrapped in the same blanket she'd been wrapped in for the past several hours, the Codex under her arm, her eyes fixed on the horizon with the particular intensity of someone who was seeing it differently than she had before.
