Chapter 9
Whispers in the Walls
Leo overhears his stepmother on the phone, her voice laced with a cold anger directed at him. He realizes the depth of her possessiveness and the danger he's truly in. This fuels his resolve to escape, no matter the risk.
The house, vast and silent as a tomb, always seemed to hold its breath when Leo was alone. Even the grandfather clock in the hall, usually a steady, comforting heartbeat, seemed to tick with a strained, anxious rhythm. Tonight, the air felt thicker, heavier, charged with an unseen electricity that prickled Leo’s skin. He sat on the worn rug in his room, tracing the patterns of the faded floral wallpaper with a small, grubby finger, his ears straining for any sound from beyond his door. He knew, with the certainty only a child who has learned to live in fear can possess, that his stepmother was home.
He heard her voice, a sharp, brittle sound that cut through the silence like a shard of ice. She was in the drawing-room, no doubt, pacing the Persian rug, her voice a low, venomous murmur that occasionally rose to a furious hiss. Leo crept to his door, pressing his ear against the cool wood. He couldn’t make out all the words, but the tone was unmistakable. It was always the same when she spoke of him – a possessive, chilling anger that made Leo’s stomach clench.
“He’s mine,” she hissed, the words a guttural growl that sent a shiver down Leo’s spine. “Mine to keep. No one will take him from me.”
