The floorboard, a familiar ache beneath Leo’s bare feet, was his haven. He’d discovered it weeks ago, a loose plank in the dusty, forgotten corner of the pantry, a place his stepmother rarely deigned to visit. It had become his confessional, his sanctuary, a place where the oppressive silence of the house seemed to soften, allowing the faint echoes of his mother’s lullabies to surface. Today, the memory of the key, cold and metallic, tucked away beneath that comforting imperfection, pulsed in his mind like a trapped bird.

He waited until the late afternoon sun, a pale, watery thing, began its slow descent, casting long, distorted shadows across the polished floors. Leo slipped away from his usual spot by the window, his small frame a shadow itself, melting into the hushed corridors.

The pantry was cooler, the air thick with the scent of dried herbs and the faint, lingering aroma of baked goods that never seemed to be for him. He knelt by the loose floorboard, his heart thrumming against his ribs like a frantic drum. His fingers, thin and nimble, probed the edges, finding the familiar give. With a soft scrape, he lifted the plank. There, nestled in the darkness, glinted the small, tarnished key. It felt heavier than it looked, laden with the weight of his hope. He clutched it tight, the cool metal a soothing contrast to his clammy palm.
