A Glimmer of Opportunity

His stepmother announces a rare, short trip away. The house will be emptier, her vigilance momentarily lessened. Leo sees this as his chance, a dangerous but necessary gamble to finally escape the suffocating atmosphere he calls home.

The silence in the grand house was usually a thick, suffocating blanket, but today, it felt different. It hummed with a nervous energy, a subtle shift in the air that Leo, attuned to every tremor in his stepmother’s domain, could feel prickling his skin. He sat at the vast dining table, a solitary island in a sea of polished mahogany, picking at a piece of dry toast. The clink of his fork against the china seemed impossibly loud, each sound echoing in the cavernous room.

His stepmother, a woman draped in silks and shadows, entered the dining room with the rustle of expensive fabric. Her presence always cast a chill, a frigid wave that swept through Leo’s small frame. Today, however, a strange animation flickered in her usually impassive eyes. She was dressed for travel, a tailored suit of dove-grey, her hair neatly pinned back, revealing a sharp, almost predatory profile.

“Leo,” she announced, her voice like the chime of distant, cold bells, “I am going away.”
