The grand house, once a symbol of his father’s love, now felt like a tomb, its silence amplifying the hollow ache in Leo’s chest. The failed escape, the dizzying panic of being caught, had left a raw, throbbing wound. His stepmother’s words, sharp as shards of ice, still echoed in the cavernous rooms, each syllable a fresh lash against his already bruised spirit. “You will not leave this house, Leo. Not ever. Do you understand?” Her voice, a silken thread woven with steel, had been the final nail in the coffin of his brief, exhilarating freedom.

The days that followed were a suffocating blanket of restrictions. The heavy oak door to the garden, once a tantalizing glimpse of the outside world, was now perpetually locked. His playtime, a precious hour snatched from the relentless monotony, was halved, and then eliminated altogether, replaced by endless hours of tedious lessons with a stern governess who seemed to revel in his every mistake. Even Doggy, his furry shadow, seemed to sense the shift, his usual boisterous play muted, his happy barks replaced by soft whines of concern.

Leo’s world shrank to the confines of his room, a gilded cage where the sunlight, when it managed to pierce the thick velvet curtains, seemed to mock his imprisonment. He traced the patterns on the wallpaper, the faded roses and entwined vines, each one a silent witness to his despair. He ate his meals alone in the vast dining room, the clinking of his fork against the porcelain the only sound to break the oppressive silence. His stepmother, a phantom in silks and jewels, would glide in occasionally, her eyes like chips of obsidian, surveying him with a chilling blend of possessiveness and disdain.
