Chapter 18
Echoes of the Past
Leo carries the weight of his past experiences, the fear and loneliness still lingering. But with each step away from the house, the memories begin to lose their sharpest edges, replaced by a growing sense of cautious optimism.
The air, once thick with the cloying scent of his stepmother’s perfume and the stale chill of unspoken threats, now carried the clean, bracing perfume of pine and damp earth. Leo breathed it in, deep and slow, as if trying to wash away the lingering shadows that clung to him like cobwebs. Each inhale was a small victory, a testament to the courage he’d found, a courage that felt both fragile and fierce, like a butterfly’s wing caught in a storm.
He walked, his small legs carrying him further and further from the imposing, dark silhouette of the house that had been his prison. The road beneath his worn shoes was uneven, a path carved by time and the passage of countless feet, some hurried, some slow, some perhaps like his own, propelled by a desperate need for escape. The memory of the last moments within those walls played on a loop in his mind, a silent film strip of terror and adrenaline. The frantic scrabble of his fingers against the locked attic window, the echoing thud of his stepmother’s footsteps growing closer, closer, and then the sudden, blessed darkness as Jax had pulled him into the hidden crawl space, her whispered reassurances a balm to his frayed nerves.
He could still feel the rough wood against his cheek, the smell of dust and forgotten things, and the frantic beating of his own heart against his ribs, a drum solo of pure panic. And then, Jax, her face pale in the sliver of light that pierced the gloom, her eyes wide with a fear that mirrored his own, but underscored by a steely resolve. "Go, Leo," she had breathed, her voice barely a whisper, pushing him gently towards a narrow opening he hadn't noticed before. "Go now. Don't look back."
