Chapter 16
The Road Ahead
He walks away from the house, unsure of where to go but filled with a fragile sense of relief. The world outside is vast and intimidating, but it's a world where he is finally free to choose his own path.
The heavy oak door groaned shut behind Leo, the sound echoing with a finality that settled deep in his bones. He stood on the flagstone path, the late afternoon sun a warm, unfamiliar caress on his face. For the first time in what felt like forever, the air was his to breathe, untainted by the cloying scent of lemon polish and his stepmother’s disapproval. He clutched the worn leather satchel in his small hand, its contents meager – a half-eaten biscuit, a smooth grey stone he’d found in the garden, and the tarnished silver locket that held the only image of his mother he possessed.
He didn’t look back. To look back would be to invite the cold tendrils of fear to wrap around him again, to remember the watchful eyes, the sharp words, the suffocating loneliness. Instead, he focused on the gravel path stretching before him, a ribbon of grey leading away from the imposing house that had been his prison. The world outside was a canvas of greens and browns, dappled with sunlight filtering through the leaves of ancient trees. It was vast, overwhelmingly so, and a tremor of apprehension ran through him. What lay beyond the familiar, albeit dreadful, confines of his stepmother’s estate? Where was he even going?
The question hung in the air, unanswered, but it was overshadowed by a fragile, burgeoning sense of relief. He was out. He had done it. The memory of Jax’s hushed encouragement, her eyes brimming with a shared understanding, and Doggy’s frantic, joyous barks as he’d nudged Leo towards the back gate, were vivid fragments of courage he held onto. Jax had pressed a small, folded piece of paper into his hand just yesterday, a hastily drawn map of the immediate area, marking a small stream and a cluster of woods. “Follow the water, Leo,” she’d whispered, her voice barely audible. “It will lead you away.”
