The Night of Reckoning

Under the cloak of a moonless night, Leo makes his move. He slips out of his room, the house eerily silent. Every creak of the floorboards sounds like a thunderclap in his ears as he heads towards the outer grounds.

The house breathed around Leo, a slumbering giant with a thousand tiny sighs. The moon, usually a shy observer, had retreated entirely, leaving the world outside his window a velvet, star-pricked abyss. It was the kind of dark that swallowed sound, that made the familiar feel alien. His heart, a frantic bird against his ribs, echoed the silence. This was it. The night of reckoning, a phrase he’d overheard his stepmother mutter once, laced with a venom that had always made him flinch. Now, it felt like a promise.

He slid from the narrow bed, his bare feet finding the worn rug with practiced stealth. Each step was a negotiation with the floorboards, a silent plea for them to hold their tongues. The air in his room was thick with the scent of dust and faded lavender, the remnants of a life that wasn’t his. He clutched the small, smooth stone Jax had given him, its coolness a small anchor in the swirling sea of his fear. Jax’s words echoed in his mind, a quiet reassurance: "Courage, little one. The night has eyes, but it also has ears that listen to the brave."

The door to his room was ajar, a dark sliver that beckoned him into the shadowed hallway. The grandfather clock in the hall, usually a booming sentinel, was unnervingly still. Had it stopped? Or had his stepmother finally silenced its insistent tick-tock, just as she seemed determined to silence everything else? He held his breath, listening. Only the faint hum of the house settling, the distant whisper of wind through the ancient oaks outside.
