Chapter 10
Jax's Quiet Gift
Jax leaves a small satchel near Leo's room. Inside, a stale bread roll, a piece of cheese, and a crudely drawn map of the grounds. It's a silent act of defiance, a lifeline for Leo's impending escape.
The silence of the house was a heavy blanket, muffling Leo’s every breath. He sat by his window, the cold glass pressing against his forehead, watching the dust motes dance in the slivers of afternoon sun. Each one seemed to drift with a freedom he could only dream of. He traced a finger through the condensation, drawing a shaky line that led, in his mind, far beyond the manicured lawns and the imposing stone walls. His stepmother’s voice, sharp and brittle as breaking ice, echoed in his memory, a constant reminder of the invisible chains that bound him. She was a shadow that never truly left, her gaze, even when unseen, felt like a physical weight.
Jax, the housemaid, moved through the grand rooms like a ghost herself, her footsteps barely disturbing the oppressive quiet. She was a woman etched with a weariness that Leo recognized in his own small heart. He’d seen her sometimes, her eyes holding a flicker of something that wasn’t coldness, a softness that was a rare and precious thing in this house. He’d never spoken to her directly, not beyond a mumbled “thank you” when she’d placed a plate of lukewarm food before him. But he saw her. He saw the way she’d pause, her hand hovering near his door, or the way her gaze would linger on him for a fraction longer than necessary.
Tonight, the air felt different. A nervousness, sharp and electric, thrummed beneath Leo’s skin. It wasn’t just the usual gnawing dread, but a potent mix of fear and a fragile, burgeoning hope. He knew, with a certainty that settled deep in his bones, that his chance was coming. The grand house, with its echoing halls and suffocating opulence, felt like a cage ready to spring open, but only if he dared to push against the bars.
