Chapter 7
Seeds of Change
Working alongside Bartholomew, Ashley saw his dedication and the joy his bread brought. Tending the gardens with Elder Willow, she learned patience and the quiet satisfaction of nurturing life, her pride slowly softening.
The scent of yeast and warm sugar clung to Ashley like a second skin, a far cry from the perfumed silks she usually favored. Her hands, once accustomed to the delicate touch of royal embroidery, were now dusted with flour, sticky with dough. Bartholomew the Baker, a man whose movements were as precise and rhythmic as a heartbeat, watched her with a gentle gaze. He didn’t chide her when she kneaded too roughly, nor did he sigh when a stray strand of her meticulously coiffed hair fell into the mixing bowl. Instead, he’d simply nod, demonstrate the correct way to fold the dough, his large hands moving with a practiced ease.
“You see, Princess,” he’d said earlier that morning, his voice a low rumble that somehow soothed her restless spirit, “bread is not just flour and water. It’s patience. It’s love. You give it too much of yourself, and it rewards you tenfold.”
Ashley had scoffed inwardly. Love? Patience? These were concepts as foreign to her as the desert sands to the verdant Rainbow Villages. Yet, as she watched Bartholomew’s face light up when he pulled a golden-brown loaf from the oven, its aroma filling the small bakery with a comforting warmth, she couldn’t deny the genuine delight it brought to the faces of the villagers who lined up outside. Children, their eyes wide with anticipation, would tug at their parents’ sleeves, their small voices a chorus of eager requests. Bartholomew would greet each one with a smile, his hands never ceasing their work. He’d even let the littlest ones press their fingers into the soft dough, their giggles a sweet melody that echoed in the otherwise quiet space.
