Princess Ashley, accustomed to the silken cushions of her chambers and the hushed admiration of the court, found herself standing before the warm, flour-dusted entrance of Bartholomew the Baker’s humble shop. The air, thick with the comforting scent of yeast and sugar, felt alien to her nostrils, accustomed to the delicate perfumes of her gowns. Her father, the King, had delivered his decree with a gentle firmness that brooked no argument. “Ashley,” he had said, his eyes holding a familiar sadness, “you will spend your mornings assisting Bartholomew. And your afternoons, you will lend your hand to Elder Willow in the village gardens.”

Ashley had recoiled as if struck. “But, Father! I am a princess! I do not knead dough or… or dig in the dirt!” Her voice, usually sharp and commanding, now held a tremor of disbelief, tinged with the familiar edge of disdain. She smoothed the emerald silk of her dress, a gesture meant to emphasize her own importance. The King had merely sighed, a sound like wind rustling through dry leaves. “A princess also learns the value of service, my dear. And humility.”

Now, she stood on the threshold, her chin held high, a defiant spark in her sapphire eyes. She was supposed to fail, wasn’t she? That would surely prove her point, that these menial tasks were beneath her, and that her father’s judgment was flawed. She’d make a mess of the bread, burn the pastries, and send Bartholomew into a frenzy of despair. Then, she would return to her father, triumphant in her ineptitude, and demand to be restored to her rightful place.
