The scent of the moonpetal herb, a delicate perfume of starlight and dew, clung to Barnaby’s feathers, a tangible promise of healing. He clutched the precious sprigs in his beak, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a jolt of fear through him, but it was a fear tempered now by purpose, by the desperate, burning need to return. The forest, once a labyrinth of apprehension, now felt like a race track, each shadow a fleeting opponent to be outrun.

He burst from the dense undergrowth, the familiar clearing of his home a welcome sight. But the sight that greeted him was anything but peaceful. The air thrummed with a primal tension. Henrietta lay still, her breathing shallow, her usually vibrant feathers dulled and clinging to her frail form. And then he saw it. A shadow, long and sleek, slinking with predatory grace towards the nest. The fox.

Barnaby’s breath hitched. He had imagined this moment, had rehearsed heroic charges in his mind, but the reality was a cold, hard knot of terror in his gut. The fox was closer than he had ever seen it, its eyes, like chips of amber, fixed on the vulnerable egg nestled beside Henrietta. He saw the flick of its tail, the subtle shift of its weight, the coiled readiness that spoke of a hunter’s intent.
