The forest floor was a tapestry of fallen leaves, damp and fragrant, a stark contrast to the sun-drenched yard Barnaby knew as home. Each step crunching beneath his talons felt like a transgression, a step further away from Henrietta, from the warmth of their nest, from the precious, fragile life nestled there. He remembered the tales whispered by the older hens, stories of predators with eyes like embers and teeth like daggers, stories that had always sent him scurrying for the safety of Henrietta’s side. Now, those stories felt chillingly real, and he was on his own.
