Chapter 9
A Daring Escape
Fearing expulsion and fueled by a thirst for truth, Kaida and Zayden sneak out of SkyBound Academy. Their destination: the treacherous Whispering Peaks, said to be the last refuge of ancient wyverns.
The air in the dorm room was thick with a tension that had nothing to do with the approaching dawn. Kaida, usually a restless sleeper, lay rigid beneath her blankets, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest. Outside, the moon, a pale sliver in the inky sky, offered little comfort. The word echoed in her mind, a harsh clang against the fragile hope that had begun to bloom within her since her arrival at SkyBound. Seraphina’s accusations, though dismissed by Master Eldrin for now, hung like a storm cloud, threatening to break and wash away everything Kaida had worked for.

A floorboard creaked in the hallway. Kaida’s eyes snapped open, her senses on high alert. She held her breath, listening. Silence. Just the distant hoot of an owl. She exhaled slowly, the air catching in her throat. They couldn’t stay here. Not with the whispers already starting, the suspicious glances from other students, the veiled disapproval from some instructors. Master Eldrin had given them a reprieve, a chance to prove themselves, but the shadow of doubt had been cast.
