The air in the restricted archives was thick with the scent of aged parchment and forgotten dust. Sunlight, strained through narrow, leaded windows high on the impossibly curved walls, dappled the towering shelves like hesitant spotlights. Kaida, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs, ran a finger along the spine of a book bound in what felt like petrified leather. Beside her, Zayden, his brow furrowed in concentration, was meticulously cataloging a stack of brittle scrolls. This was their clandestine mission, a deviation from the rigorous training regimen, undertaken in the hushed hours after dusk, when the academy slept.

He knew about her predicament, the whispers that had followed her since her accidental display of Moon Magic, the forced silence imposed by Master Eldrin. He’d been both skeptical and strangely intrigued, his competitive spirit momentarily overshadowed by a burgeoning sense of camaraderie.
