The ornate wooden door to Master Eldrin’s study felt impossibly heavy, each grain of polished oak a testament to the weight of her impending doom. Kaida’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a desperate, trapped bird. She’d expected a summons, of course, after the… incident. The hushed whispers that had followed her through the academy halls, the pointed glares from students and even a few junior instructors, were a constant, chilling reminder. But a summons to the Headmaster’s study? That was the official, undeniable seal of her impending exile.

He didn’t look up immediately. The silence stretched, taut and humming with unspoken tension. Kaida stood just inside the doorway, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. She felt exposed, vulnerable, as if her every secret was laid bare beneath the scrutinizing gaze of the academy’s venerable leader.
