The air in the SkyBound Academy training grounds crackled with the nervous energy of a hundred young hopefuls. Sunlight, sharp and unforgiving, glinted off the polished scales of the practice wyverns tethered in their pens, their roars a constant, deep thrum beneath the chatter of students. The Eclipse Trial. The words hung heavy in the air, a promise of glory and a threat of failure. It was only a fortnight away, and the pressure to perform was a palpable thing, tightening chests and quickening pulses.
Kaida felt it most acutely. Every gust of wind that buffeted her as she attempted a clumsy dive, every spark that failed to ignite from her fingertips, sent a fresh wave of anxiety washing over her. Her Moon Magic, the whispered secret she guarded with a ferocity that surprised even herself, felt like a clumsy, untamed beast coiled within her, refusing to obey the commands of her will. “You’re holding back, Kaida,” Zayden’s voice cut through her internal turmoil. He landed his practice wyvern, a sleek, obsidian creature named Shadowfang, with a grace that made Kaida’s stomach clench. His own elemental control was exceptional, a controlled fury of wind and lightning that danced around him like a second skin. “You’ve got the instinct, I can see it. But your mind is miles away, somewhere behind the clouds.”
