The classroom hummed with the usual midday chatter, a cacophony of adolescent anxieties and whispered secrets. Rosalind, however, heard none of it. Her gaze, a fixed point of unwavering intensity, was locked on Abbas at the back of the room. He was leaning over his desk, his brow furrowed in concentration, completely oblivious to the storm brewing within her. It had been days since the icy silence had descended between them, days since his name had appeared on her phone screen, stark and unforgiving, followed by the dreaded word: BLOCKED. Each tick of the clock felt like a hammer blow against her already bruised heart.

Lily, ever the observant friend, squeezed Rosalind’s arm, a silent question in her eyes. Rosalind offered a weak, brittle smile, a pale imitation of her usual effervescence. Lily’s hesitation to procure Abbas’s number, her worried pronouncements about his potential reaction, had been a premonition she’d chosen to ignore, blinded by the fervent desire to bridge the chasm that separated her from him. Now, the chasm felt like an uncrossable abyss.

The school corridors were a minefield of awkward encounters. Each time their paths crossed, a deliberate, almost theatrical avoidance occurred. Abbas would turn his head, his gaze sweeping past her as if she were a phantom, an unwelcome smudge on his otherwise perfect vision. Rosalind, her cheeks burning with a mixture of humiliation and a fierce, defiant pride, would mirror his actions, her eyes darting in the opposite direction, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. It was a silent war, waged with averted glances and stiffened shoulders, and Rosalind was losing.
