She waited, willing the visitor away. Another, louder knock. There was a pause—then Silas's voice slipped through the door, too smooth, too familiar. “Elara? Can we talk?”
Her body tensed. A part of her trembled at the sound, the memory of betrayal still raw. The old fears flared—the dread of being alone, the ache to be believed and protected. Yet now those feelings contended with a sharper instinct: self-preservation.
