The air in the park buzzed with the excited chatter of children and the distant rumble of a bus. Karim’s mother, her hand a warm anchor in his, pointed towards a cluster of brightly coloured swings, her smile a beacon of reassurance. But Karim’s gaze drifted, snagging on the unfamiliar trees, their leaves a shade of green he hadn’t seen before, and the vast expanse of sky that felt both too big and too empty. He clutched his mother’s hand tighter, a knot of anxiety tightening in his stomach. Around him, children shrieked with laughter, their voices a foreign melody he couldn't decipher. He saw Lily, her red hair a fiery bob as she chased a bright blue ball, her laughter ringing out clear and sharp. He watched her for a moment, a flicker of something akin to curiosity stirring within him, but the fear held him captive. He was a small boat adrift on a sea of newness, and he longed for the familiar shores of home.

Mr. Davies, his teacher, a man with kind eyes and a booming voice that somehow managed to be gentle, gathered the class. “Alright everyone, remember the rules! Stay with your grown-ups, and don’t wander off. We’ve got so much to see!” Karim’s mother nodded, giving Karim a reassuring squeeze. He tried to smile back, but it felt like a fragile thing, easily broken. He clung to her side as they followed Mr. Davies towards a winding path that led deeper into the park.

The path opened into a vast meadow, dotted with wildflowers that swayed like tiny dancers in the breeze. Karim’s mother pointed out a particularly vibrant patch of purple, her voice soft. “Look, Karim. Like the lavender fields near our home.” He nodded, a faint echo of memory surfacing, but the overwhelming strangeness of it all kept him tethered to his fear. Lily, having retrieved her ball, was now a whirlwind of energy, her laughter echoing as she ran with her friends. Karim watched her, a silent observer in the kaleidoscope of this new world. He noticed the way she moved, the easy confidence in her stride, and a small part of him wished he could be like her, free and unburdened.
