Chapter 20
Home in His Heart
Karim knows he will always carry his homeland in his heart. But now, he also carries the warmth of friendship and the excitement of his new life in England. He is no longer just a refugee boy, but Karim, the boy with two homes.
Karim traced the condensation on the bus window, the grey English sky a familiar, yet still somewhat melancholic, sight. Outside, houses blurred past, each one a little box of secrets, just like the one he now lived in. It had been weeks since the park adventure, weeks since Lily had found him huddled in the den, weeks since the world had suddenly felt a little less terrifying and a lot more… possible.
He thought about the den, a small, damp hollow under a gnarled oak tree, a place he’d stumbled upon when panic had seized him, when the vastness of the park had swallowed him whole. He’d been separated from his mother, from Lily, from everything familiar, and for a heart-stopping moment, he’d been utterly alone. But then, a flicker of something, a memory of the dusty, sun-baked hills of his homeland, had sparked within him. He’d remembered how to read the land, how to listen to the rustle of leaves, how to find a path even when no path was visible. He'd found the den, and in it, a strange kind of peace.
And then Lily. She’d found him there, her eyes wide with concern, not with fear or suspicion, but with a simple, glowing kindness. She hadn’t asked too many questions, hadn't made him feel like a stranger. She’d just sat with him, her presence a warm, quiet anchor. They’d talked, or rather, Lily had chattered, and Karim had listened, his English slowly, surely, unfurling itself, like a shy flower opening to the sun. He’d told her about the den, and she’d told him about her secret hiding spot, a hollow in a willow tree by the river. They had shared a secret, a small, precious thing that bound them together.
