Learning New Words
Karim starts to learn English words from Lily and his teacher, Mr. Davies. He practices saying 'hello,' 'thank you,' and 'friend.' Each new word is like a key unlocking a door.
Karim traced the letters on the page with his finger, a small frown creasing his brow. The squiggles and lines seemed to dance, refusing to settle into meaning. Beside him, Lily’s bright blue eyes sparkled with a mixture of patience and excitement. She pointed to a picture of a fluffy, white dog. “Dog,” she said, her voice soft and clear. “D-O-G. Dog.”
Karim repeated the sound, his tongue feeling clumsy and thick. “Dohg.”
Lily giggled, a sound like tiny bells. “Close! Dog. Like this.” She nudged his hand gently, guiding his finger to the word printed beneath the picture. “Dog.”
