Chapter 15
Sharing a Toy
During playtime, Lily offers Karim one of her toys. He hesitates, then accepts. They play together quietly, using gestures and simple words. It's the beginning of real friendship.
The school playground buzzed with a symphony of shouts and laughter. Karim sat on the edge of a colourful climbing frame, his small hands gripping the cold metal bars. He watched the other children chase each other, their faces alight with joy, a world away from the quiet ache in his own chest. It was playtime, a time for running and tumbling, for sharing secrets and making plans. For Karim, it was another hour of watching, of feeling like a shadow on the edge of a bright, vibrant painting.
Lily, her bright red hair a beacon in the sea of children, bounced a worn, slightly deflated football against the brick wall. She glanced over at Karim, her brow furrowed with a familiar concern. He was always there, on the fringes, a solitary island in a bustling ocean. Today, she had a plan. Clutching a small, wooden carved bird, its wings outstretched as if in mid-flight, she made her way towards him.
Karim’s eyes, dark and observant, followed her approach. He tensed, a familiar knot of anxiety tightening in his stomach. He didn’t want to be noticed, not really. Not when he didn’t know what to say, or how to say it. The sounds of the playground, so boisterous and alien, seemed to amplify his own silence.
