A Tentative Hello

Back at school, Karim sees Lily. He manages a small wave. Lily waves back enthusiastically. The wall of shyness is starting to crumble, brick by brick. He feels a little less alone.

The next morning, the school corridors buzzed with the usual cacophony of shouts, laughter, and the scuffing of trainers. Karim clutched his worn backpack, his eyes darting around, still not quite used to the sheer volume of noise and movement. He kept his head down, a habit formed from his days of trying to be invisible. But then, he saw her. Lily. She was by her locker, her bright red hair a beacon in the muted browns and greys of the school. His heart gave a little flutter, a strange mix of apprehension and something akin to… hope.

He hesitated. What was he supposed to do? Wave? Say hello? The words felt like pebbles stuck in his throat. He remembered the park, the shared discovery of the den, Lily’s easy smile when she’d found him. It had felt like a secret shared, a tiny bridge built between their two worlds. But now, back in the familiar, overwhelming landscape of school, the old fears crept back.

He watched as Lily turned, her gaze sweeping across the hallway. For a moment, her eyes met his. Karim’s breath hitched. He wanted to disappear, to melt into the lockers. But then, something shifted. He remembered Lily’s hand, warm and steady, guiding him when he’d stumbled. He remembered her voice, clear and kind, asking if he was okay. He took a deep breath, a tiny, almost imperceptible movement of his hand. He lifted it, just a fraction, and gave a small, hesitant wave.
