The Walk Back Together
Lily helps Karim find his way back to his mother and the teacher. He walks beside Lily, not quite so afraid anymore. He feels a tiny spark of hope, thanks to his new friend.
The rustling leaves seemed to whisper secrets as Karim walked, his small hand tucked securely in Lily’s. The panic that had tightened his chest just moments before was slowly loosening its grip, replaced by a strange, warm feeling. He glanced at Lily, her face alight with a gentle smile, and a tiny spark of hope flickered within him. He wasn't completely alone anymore.
“Are you okay, Karim?” Lily asked, her voice soft like the afternoon breeze.
Karim nodded, a shy smile touching his lips. He wanted to say more, to thank her for finding him, for not being scared like he was, but the words still felt like shy birds trapped in his throat. He managed a small, “Yes.”
