Chapter 12
A Shared Secret
Karim shows Lily his drawing. Lily points to it and says 'Afghanistan?' Karim nods, a small smile finally appearing. They have a secret now, a shared moment of understanding in the hidden den.
The air in the den was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a smell that was surprisingly comforting to Karim. It reminded him of the secret places he used to build back home, hidden amongst the pomegranate trees. He sat cross-legged on the mossy ground, his back against a gnarled root, the rough bark a familiar sensation against his thin jumper. Lily sat opposite him, her bright eyes curious, watching him with a quiet intensity. The panic of being lost had faded, replaced by a strange sense of calm, of being found in this unexpected, wild place.
He reached into the worn pocket of his trousers and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. It was a drawing, one he’d been working on for days, a secret he’d kept tucked away, much like this den. He’d drawn it with a stubby pencil he’d found, his fingers smudged with graphite. It depicted a vast, blue sky, dotted with fluffy white clouds, and beneath it, a cluster of houses with pointed roofs, nestled against rolling, sun-baked hills. A small figure, a boy with spiky hair, stood in the foreground, a kite soaring above him. It was a memory, a piece of his heart he carried with him.
He unfolded it carefully, smoothing out the creases with his thumb. He held it out to Lily, his hand trembling slightly. He didn’t know if she would understand. He didn’t know if she would care. It was a risk, a small, brave leap into the unknown.
