The rustling leaves seemed to whisper secrets only the wind understood, and Karim, hidden away in his newfound sanctuary, felt a strange kinship with their hushed voices. The thrill of discovery, of finding a place that felt almost his own, warred with the lingering tendrils of fear that had wrapped around him since he’d been separated from his mother. He squeezed his eyes shut, bracing himself for a shout, for a scolding, for the return of the overwhelming fear. He imagined the park keeper, stern and imposing, or perhaps even his mother, her brow furrowed with worry. But the sound that followed wasn't angry. It was soft, hesitant.
