Chapter 10
A Familiar Feeling
Inside the den, Karim feels a strange sense of comfort. He remembers the mountains and the quiet places of his homeland. He draws a picture in the dirt, a memory of home, surprising himself with his bravery.
The air inside the den was cool and damp, smelling of earth and old leaves. Sunlight, filtered through the thick canopy of trees, painted dappled patterns on the mossy floor. Karim sank back against the rough bark of a fallen log, his breath coming a little easier now. It wasn't like the wide-open spaces of Afghanistan, not at all, but there was a quietness here, a stillness that felt… familiar. He closed his eyes, and for a fleeting moment, he could almost hear the rustle of wind through the tall grasses of home, the distant bleating of sheep, the murmur of his grandmother’s voice.
He opened his eyes and looked around. The den was small, a hollowed-out space beneath the gnarled roots of an ancient oak. It was a secret place, a hidden world tucked away from the bustling park and the chattering children. He traced a pattern in the soft dirt with his finger. It was a simple shape at first, a circle, then a line, then another. Slowly, a picture began to emerge. It was the shape of the mountains that cradled his village, their peaks sharp against the endless blue sky. He added tiny dots for the eagles that soared above, and a winding line for the river that rushed down their slopes.
As he drew, a strange feeling bloomed in his chest. It wasn't the knot of fear that had been tightening since they arrived in England, but something else entirely. It was a warmth, a quiet pride. He, Karim, who had felt so small and lost, had found this place. He, Karim, who couldn't speak the strange words, had created something recognizable, something from his own world, here in this alien land. He looked at his drawing in the dirt, a small, secret offering to a forgotten landscape. It was an act of defiance, a whisper of his true self in the face of overwhelming newness. He was still scared, yes, but there was a spark of something else now, a flicker of courage he hadn’t known he possessed.
