The café door chimed. Everyone looked up. The suited man from two days ago stood in the doorway, holding a leather satchel and a coffee cup from a chain three blocks away, which Maya noticed immediately and took as a personal insult.
“You brought outside coffee into my establishment,” she said, flat.
“I needed the caffeine to get here. Your espresso machine was off when I passed at six.”
