The afternoon light had that particular warmth that makes ordinary streets look like they’ve been professionally lit. Ashley felt it on her shoulders as she walked beside Rowan, their footsteps falling into an easy rhythm. The café door had barely clicked shut behind them before the world outside felt simpler, as if the air itself had been turned down a degree in volume.
"You know," Rowan said, "I think that was the most eventful tart I've ever eaten. I don't think I'll be able to look at a lemon meringue the same way again."
"It's the Leo effect. He turns everything into a production. Even pastries."
