The red light on the recorder blinked like a slow, deliberate heartbeat. I watched it, counting the seconds between flashes. One. Two. Three. The silence in the room was heavy, thick as smoke, and Detective Davies stood against the wall, her arms crossed, her eyes fixed on me with an unnerving stillness.
I wanted to look away, to fix my gaze back on the chipped paint of the table, but I couldn't. The light held me, a tiny beacon in the gray room, and I felt the truth rising in my chest like bile. I had been holding it back for so long, stuffing it down, twisting it into shapes that I thought would protect us. But the shapes were crumbling. The lies were dissolving.
Davies didn't speak. She just waited. Her patience was a pressure, a weight that settled on my shoulders and pushed me down into the hard plastic chair. I thought of my mother, in some other room, telling her own version of the story. I wondered if she was sticking to the script we had hastily written in the dark hours after Robert's death. I wondered if she knew that the script had failed.
