Chapter 6

Leaving the Room

Chapter Context: The cuffs are cold and tight. The officer leads Emily down the corridor. She does not look back. She hears the door to the interview room click shut behind her. The sound is final. She walks past the flickering light, past the beige walls, past the smell of antiseptic. She thinks of her mother. She hopes she is okay. She hopes the detectives will leave her alone. The officer opens a door to a holding cell. It's small, with a bench and a toilet. Emily sits on the bench. The door closes. She is alone. The silence is different now—not the tense silence of the interview room, but a hollow silence. She stares at the wall. It's gray, not white. She thinks of the chipped paint on the table. She thinks of her lies. She wonders if they will hold. She wonders if her mother will come. She wonders if she will ever go home. Time passes. She does not know how long. The door opens. It's Miller. He looks tired. He says they have verified part of her story. The knife in her mother's kitchen matches the wounds. Emily's heart sinks. She had hoped they would not find it. Miller says they are still investigating. He asks if she wants to change her statement. Emily shakes her head. Miller sighs. He says her mother is in the waiting room. She wants to see her. Emily's heart leaps. She nods. Miller leaves. A few minutes later, the door opens again. It's Sarah. Her face is pale, her eyes red. She rushes to Emily, hugs her. Emily feels her mother's tears on her neck. Sarah whispers, 'Why?' Emily does not answer. She cannot. She holds her mother tight. Sarah pulls back. She looks at Emily's face. 'I know what you did,' she says. Emily's heart stops. Sarah's voice is broken. 'You took the blame for me. But I can't let you do that.' Emily's eyes widen. 'Mom, no.' Sarah shakes her head. 'I killed him, Emily. He was going to hurt you. I couldn't let him.' Emily's world spins. She thought she was protecting her mother. But her mother was protecting her. The truth crashes down. Sarah says she will tell the detectives. Emily begs her not to. But Sarah is already walking to the door. She opens it. She calls for Miller. Emily watches, helpless. The chapter ends with Sarah confessing, the truth finally out, and Emily left alone in the cell, the weight of her sacrifice undone, the secret that was meant to protect now a burden shared, her mother's love both a salvation and a tragedy.

The cuffs are cold and tight. The metal bites into my wrists as the officer leads me down the corridor. I don’t look back. I hear the door to the interview room click shut behind me. The sound is final, a lid closing on a box I’ll never open again.

We walk past the flickering light. It buzzes, a dying insect trapped in glass. Past the beige walls, each one the same as the last, a monotony that feels intentional, designed to erase any sense of time or place. Past the smell of antiseptic, sharp and clean, a lie that covers the rot underneath. My feet move, but I’m not in them anymore. I’m somewhere else, floating above myself, watching this girl in handcuffs shuffle down a hall.

I think of my mother. I hope she is okay. I imagine her at home, maybe making tea, the kettle whistling a familiar song. I hope the detectives will leave her alone. I hope they believe whatever story I’ve managed to hold together. I hope she never has to know the details, the ugly truths I’ve buried so deep they feel like stones in my chest.
