Chapter 15
The Keychain
Emily is released from juvenile detention and begins her new life on probation. She retrieves her mother's rabbit keychain, starts school, attends therapy, and performs community service. She visits her mother in prison, where they have a difficult but hopeful conversation about the future and the weight of their shared secret.
The rabbit keychain was waiting for me in a small brown envelope at the probation office. Martinez had delivered it the day before, a courtesy I hadn't expected. I held the envelope in my hands, feeling the weight of the metal rabbit inside, the familiar shape that had been a talisman of my mother's love. My fingers trembled as I tore open the flap. The rabbit fell into my palm, its ears slightly bent, the paint chipped on one side where it had knocked against furniture over the years. It was perfect. It was hers. It was mine.

Outside the probation office, the January air was sharp and cold. I pulled my jacket tighter, the thin fabric from the detention center not enough against the wind. I had no coat of my own—my mother's house was sealed, her belongings in storage. I was staying with a foster family, the Harrisons, who had agreed to take me after my release. They were kind, in a distant way, like people who were trying to be good without getting too close.
