The morning came without a dawn. There was no window in my cell, no sky to mark the passage of day. Only the flicker of the fluorescent light in the hallway, the distant clatter of trays from the dining hall, the muffled sounds of other girls waking to another day of routine. I lay on my bunk, staring at the ceiling, counting the cracks in the paint. One, two, three, four. A jagged line branched into five, then six, like veins on a leaf. I traced them with my eyes until they blurred.

I hadn't slept. Not really. I'd drifted in and out of a restless haze, my mind replaying the same images over and over: the keychain slipping from my fingers, Brennan's cold smile, my mother's face in the courtroom, the moment she was led away. Each image was a fresh cut, a sharp reminder of everything I had lost. The silence of my cell was a weight, pressing down on my chest, making it hard to breathe.

A key turned in the lock. The door swung open, and Officer Martinez stood there, his face neutral but his eyes carrying a hint of something softer—sympathy, maybe, or pity. I didn't want either.
