The classroom buzzed with a peculiar sort of quiet. It wasn't the hushed reverence of a library, nor the expectant silence before a surprise party. This was a quiet tinged with confusion, a collective holding of breath as if everyone was waiting for the next shoe to drop, or perhaps, the next crayon to levitate. Lily, perched on the edge of her chair, felt a tremor of relief mixed with a pang of guilt. The mischievous pixie, a whirlwind of glitter and giggles, was finally, *finally*, losing its sparkle.

It had started subtly, like a tiny crack appearing in a perfectly drawn vase. The pixie, which had been darting between desks with impossible speed, leaving trails of shimmering dust and the occasional bewildered sneeze in its wake, began to falter. Its giggles, once sharp and infectious, were now softer, more like the rustling of dry leaves. Its bright, sapphire eyes, which had been scanning the room for its next target of playful disruption, now seemed a little unfocused, a touch weary.

Mr. Harrison, bless his patient soul, was attempting to conduct a lesson on the life cycle of a butterfly, a topic that felt hilariously out of place given the current airborne chaos. He’d just pointed to a diagram of a chrysalis when a faint, shimmering outline of the pixie flickered near the ceiling fan. It wobbled precariously, like a poorly drawn cartoon character about to fall off the screen.
