Lily’s heart hammered against her ribs like a frantic drummer. The giggling, the tumbling, the general, glorious chaos that had erupted in Mrs. Gable’s classroom wasn’t just any mischief; it was her mischief. She stared at Pip, his usually cheerful tail tucked between his legs, his big brown eyes wide with concern. He nudged her hand with his wet nose, a silent question hanging in the air: What do we do, Lily?

She knew, with a sinking certainty that felt like a lead weight in her stomach, that the tiny, shimmering whirlwind causing Mrs. Gable’s carefully arranged colored pencils to dance a jig was her doing. The pixie. It was her pixie. She’d drawn it, hadn’t she? In a moment of fleeting, impulsive boredom, just after finishing Pip’s perfectly plump tail. A few quick lines, a swirl of ink, and then… poof. A giggling, buzzing, trouble-making sprite had sprung from the page.

“Oh, Pip,” she whispered, her voice barely a squeak. “It’s me. I did this.”
