Chapter 4
The Hermit's Wisdom
Elara finds a reclusive hermit who possesses ancient knowledge. He reveals the blight is an imbalance, a consequence of the outside world's encroachment, not a curse. The stones are reacting to this forgotten disruption.
The air grew thin as Elara climbed, the familiar scent of pine and damp earth giving way to a sharper, almost metallic tang. Her boots crunched on a path that seemed more instinct than design, a whisper of worn stone beneath the encroaching moss. She had walked for what felt like days, the looming peaks of the Whisperwind Mountains a constant, silent presence above her. The village felt impossibly far behind now, a memory of hearth smoke and worried faces. The blight, too, seemed to recede with every upward step, though the gnawing anxiety in her chest remained a persistent companion.
She found him not by sight, but by sound. A low, resonant hum, like the deep thrum of the earth itself, vibrated through the soles of her boots. It was a sound that Elara, in her quiet communion with the stones, had begun to recognize – the deep, slow pulse of ancient things. Following it, she emerged into a small clearing, cradled between two colossal, moss-draped boulders. In the center, a figure sat cross-legged, his back to her, silhouetted against the pale, high-altitude sun. He was cloaked in a patchwork of roughspun wool, and his white hair, long and unbound, seemed to catch the light like spun moonlight. He was tending to a small fire, its smoke curling lazily upwards, carrying the aroma of herbs Elara couldn't quite place.
He didn't startle when she cleared her throat. He simply turned his head, his eyes, the color of a stormy sea, meeting hers. There was an ancient kindness in them, a depth that spoke of countless seasons witnessed. He offered a small, almost imperceptible nod.
