The children responded with their own words, their laughter weaving a tapestry of sound around Elara. He was no longer on the outside, but a part of their joyful chorus.

Elara, his heart still thrumming a nervous rhythm against his ribs, braced himself for the inevitable. He’d expected a ripple of confusion, perhaps a few pointed fingers, or worse, the deafening silence that had been his constant companion. But the children, their faces a mosaic of bright-eyed curiosity, didn’t flinch. Instead, a little girl with hair the color of spun sunshine, who’d been meticulously arranging pebbles into a miniature fortress, tilted her head. “What did you say?” she asked, her voice as light as a butterfly’s wing.

Elara’s breath hitched. He’d said ‘stone’. A simple, unassuming word. He hadn’t intended for it to be a grand pronouncement, merely a shared observation, a tentative bridge thrown across the chasm of his isolation. He’d seen her struggling to balance a particularly large, jagged rock atop her wall, and the word had simply…escaped.

He swallowed, the dry lump in his throat feeling like a rogue pebble itself. He pointed to the offending rock. “That one,” he managed, his voice barely a tremor. “It’s… wiggly.”
