The air in the Mirror Garden hung heavy and still, thick with the scent of moon-drenched jasmine and the lingering tang of forgotten wishes. For years, the garden had been a place of individual reflection. Each fairy, when she dared to gaze into its polished surfaces, saw herself – Rowan, sharp and unyielding in her thorn-armor; Bramble, her ember-wings flickering even in stillness; Wren, clutching her one-eyed doll; Ivy, her vines heavy with blossoms; Echo, her form a shimmering absence; Ash, her eyes wide with a perpetual, gentle confusion; Morrigan, her gaze sharp and assessing; and Elara, her expression soft with the memory of distant stars.

But today, something was different. The usual playful dance of reflections was gone. The mirrors, usually so eager to show each fairy her own unique face, now pulsed with a strange, unified light. As Rowan approached, her black thorn-armor glinting, she saw not her own stern visage, but the serene countenance of a fairy she did not recognize. Her brow furrowed, a rare crack in her icy composure. The woman in the mirror was beautiful, yes, but there was a profound sadness in her eyes, a weariness that seemed to echo through the very glass.

Bramble, drawn by the unusual silence, arrived next, her wings shedding faint sparks like dying embers. She stopped short, her fiery gaze fixed on the mirror Rowan was studying. "What is this?" she hissed, her voice a low growl. "Who is she?" The reflection remained unchanged, a single, enigmatic face gazing back at them both.
