Wren stumbled over a gnarled root, her bare feet catching on the rough bark. She hugged her rag doll tighter, its single button eye staring blankly ahead. Monsters, she thought, they hid behind every tree, their shadowy claws waiting to snatch her away. The forest was a symphony of rustles and snaps, each sound a potential threat. She shivered, though the air was warm, a chill that had nothing to do with the temperature.

She kicked at a fallen leaf, watching it skitter across the mossy ground. It reminded her of something, a flicker of a memory, like a firefly’s brief glow. A memory of running, of laughter, of a sun that felt like a warm hug. The memory dissolved as quickly as it appeared, leaving a hollow ache in its wake. It was always like this. Glimpses of something bright and beautiful, only to be swallowed by the familiar, creeping darkness.
