Bramble's Wildfire

Bramble’s wings, the colour of a dying sun, beat a rhythm against the inferno that was her home. The air shimmered and warped, thick with the scent of pine and ash, a perpetual twilight where flames danced with a life of their own. Here, amongst the crackling branches and the molten heart of the forest, Bramble reigned. She was the Fury, a whirlwind of destruction born from a pain too great to bear.

Today, the pain was a dull throb beneath the surface, a constant hum that threatened to ignite her temper. She’d just returned from a skirmish near the Whispering Willow, a place she usually avoided. The whispers there, they always pricked at something deep inside her, something she’d long ago buried beneath layers of fire. A young sapling, twisted and weeping sap like tears, had been caught in the encroaching shadows of the Hollow King’s influence. Bramble hadn’t hesitated. Her wings flared, a conflagration unfurling, and the shadows recoiled. The sapling, scorched but alive, was now tended to by Ivy, whose vines were already weaving a healing balm.

But the encounter had left Bramble unsettled. The hollow echo that followed the King’s touch, the emptiness it left behind – it mirrored something within her, a void she refused to acknowledge. She kicked at a smouldering log, sending a shower of sparks into the already blazing air. “Foolish tree,” she muttered, her voice a low growl. “Why let yourself be touched?”
