The Thorn Court A dark fantasy novel inspired by the inner world of dissociation. Prologue – The Child Beneath the Ash Tree Before there were kingdoms, there was one little fairy. She laughed in the sunlight until the shadows found her. The forest split. The stars cracked. And instead of dying... she became many. Each fragment of her soul grew wings of its own, carrying a piece of the pain she could no longer hold alone. For years the fairies believed they were protecting the kingdom. None realised they were protecting one child. --- Part One – The Splintering The fairy kingdom of Briarhollow is cursed. Its Queen vanished years ago, leaving eight powerful fairy guardians to rule different parts of the forest. Each believes they alone are the rightful protector. None remember how they were created. Whenever danger comes, another fairy awakens while the others fade into mist. Time skips. Days disappear. Villages swear different queens have visited them. The forest whispers: "There was only ever one." --- The Eight Fairies 1. Rowan – The Protector Age: Appears 32 Armour made from black thorns. Carries a sword that can only be drawn when someone is threatened. Cold. Loyal. Would burn the kingdom before letting another child suffer. --- 2. Bramble – The Fury Age: Appears 25 Red wings with feathers like embers. Lives inside an endless wildfire. She destroys first and asks questions later. Underneath her rage is unbearable grief. --- 3. Wren – The Lost Child Age: Seven Barefoot. Carries a rag doll missing one eye. Believes monsters live behind every tree. She remembers things no one else can. --- 4. Ivy – The Carer Covered in flowering vines. Heals every wounded creature she finds. She cannot heal herself. --- 5. Echo – The Silent One No mouth. Speaks through birds, mirrors and dreams. Knows every secret. Cannot tell anyone directly. --- 6. Ash – The Wanderer Appears without warning. Forgets where she has been. Collects strange objects she doesn't remember taking. Time disappears around her. --- 7. Morrigan – The Watcher Lives high in abandoned towers. Sees everything. Trusts nobody. Sleeps with one eye open. --- 8. Elara – The Dreamer Lives among stars that no longer exist. Creates impossible worlds where everyone survives. She remembers what happiness once felt like. --- The Villain The Hollow King. He feeds on forgotten memories. Every memory he steals becomes another empty room inside Briarhollow. The fairies believe he is the monster. Eventually they discover he was created from every secret that was never spoken aloud. He cannot be destroyed. Only faced. --- Part Two – The Forgotten Palace The fairies discover an abandoned castle hidden beneath roots. Inside are portraits. Every painting shows the same fairy... wearing different clothes. Each portrait has one face. Not eight. None of them understand. --- Part Three – The Mirror Garden The magical mirrors stop reflecting individual fairies. Instead... they begin showing flashes of a single woman. Every fairy believes she is someone else. Until Wren whispers: "That's us." --- Final Part – Becoming Whole The fairies don't disappear. None are killed. None are erased. Instead, they choose to open every locked door inside the palace. They learn to speak to one another. Fight beside one another. Grieve together. When dawn finally arrives, the kingdom sees not one queen replacing another... but a council of wings moving as one. The scars remain. The forest remains haunted. But no fairy has to guard the darkness alone anymore. The last line reads: "The world believed the forest had always been broken. Only the stars knew it had spent its whole life learning how to survive."
