Chapter 7
The King's Suspicion
The King notices Rabi's subdued demeanor and the overzealous 'protection' from her husbands. He decides to investigate, setting the stage for a potentially explosive confrontation.
My father. The King. The very man who had, with a flick of his royal wrist, tied me to three men who seemed to have forgotten I was a person and not a prized possession. He’d always been a man of quiet authority, his presence a palpable weight in any room. Now, watching him from across the vast dining hall, a flicker of something akin to unease crossed his brow. It was a subtle thing, easily missed if one wasn’t looking for it, which, I suppose, I was. My entire existence had become a masterclass in observing the subtlest shifts in my captors’ moods.
The usual clatter of silverware and hushed whispers of servants seemed to amplify the silence that had fallen over our table. The devoted servants, the loyal protectors, the devoted companions.
But my father’s gaze lingered on me for a beat too long. It wasn't the usual paternal concern, the kind that asked if I was eating enough or if the embroidery thread was too coarse. This was different. It was a sharp, appraising look, the kind he might give a recalcitrant diplomat or a questionable trade agreement. He noticed. Oh, he *noticed*.
