One that was starting to fray at the seams. I’d spent weeks in a state of bewildered terror, my every breath seemingly monitored, my every glance scrutinized. Yet, in the quiet, terrifying moments when they shed their masks of subservience, when their eyes held that unnerving gleam of ownership, a tiny, almost imperceptible shift had occurred within me. It wasn’t courage, not yet. It was more like a dawning, a slow realization that their intense focus, while terrifying, was also… predictable.
My father’s chambers, as always, were a haven, albeit a gilded cage. He’d summoned me for afternoon tea, his usual booming laughter echoing through the opulent room. Noah, Liam, and Mark stood a respectful distance behind me, their faces carefully blank, their postures that of loyal attendants. It was a performance I was growing all too familiar with, and frankly, it was becoming tiresome.
“And how is my little dove today?” the King boomed, his eyes twinkling as he gestured for me to sit. “Are these three scoundrels behaving themselves?”
