The air in the abandoned observatory was thick with the scent of dust and forgotten starlight. Aris, his heart a frantic hummingbird against his ribs, traced the faint etchings on a brass telescope mount. He’d managed to shake off the Architects, for now, a feat that felt less like a victory and more like a temporary reprieve from an inevitable tide. The journal’s cryptic passages, Evelyn Reed’s elegant, spidery script, had led him here, to this place of silent, skyward contemplation. It spoke of ‘alignment points,’ of ‘stellar resonances,’ and of a ‘final key’ hidden not in numbers alone, but in the very fabric of the cosmos.
He’d expected solitude, the quiet hum of his own thoughts to be his only companion. He hadn’t expected the sharp, metallic click of a lock being disengaged from the outside, nor the silken whisper of a voice that cut through the stillness like a perfectly honed blade.
