The sterile hum of the server room was a familiar sound, a white noise that had become the soundtrack to my life for the past few weeks. Outside, the city was a symphony of chaos, a world reeling from the digital earthquake I’d unleashed. But in here, surrounded by blinking lights and the cool breath of conditioned air, there was a strange, fragile peace. The Dark Ledger was out. The Obsidian Circle was exposed. And Miller… Miller was gone, a ghost erased by the very system he’d sought to control.
I sat before the main console, my fingers hovering over the keyboard, a ghost limb twitching with the phantom sensation of pressure. It had been days since the OmniSec vault had gone dark, days since the world had woken up to the rot festering beneath its polished surface. News feeds scrolled endlessly on a secondary monitor – riots in financial districts, resignations from high-profile politicians, the hushed, frantic pronouncements of governments scrambling to contain the fallout. It was a mess, a beautiful, terrifying mess. And I was a part of it.
A soft chime, barely audible above the server’s drone, drew my attention. It was a notification, an anomaly in the otherwise predictable flow of data. A single, unmarked message, routed through layers of anonymized proxies, had appeared on my personal terminal. It wasn't an alert from any of the agencies scrambling to piece together the digital wreckage, nor was it a threat from any remaining remnants of the Circle. It was… different.
