The royal decree, usually delivered with a flourish of trumpets and a suspiciously large amount of glitter, had been replaced by a series of increasingly agitated sighs emanating from the King’s chambers. King Bartholomew, a man whose regal bearing usually rivaled that of a particularly well-groomed peacock, was currently resembling a ruffled pigeon. His usual booming voice, capable of inspiring awe and occasionally causing small tremors in the castle’s foundations, had devolved into a series of weary groans. The annual Royal Sleepover, a tradition that involved every member of the court, from the scullery maids to the Lord High Chancellor (who always snored the loudest), was mere days away. And the Lullaby of the Kingdom, the magical melody that guaranteed a night of dream-filled slumber for every soul within the castle walls, had vanished like a particularly elusive jigsaw piece.

Princess Pippa, whose own nights had been a kaleidoscope of restless tossing and turning, found her father slumped on his throne, his crown askew and his eyes rimmed with a shade of purple that clashed spectacularly with his royal robes. “It’s gone, Pippa!” he wailed, his voice cracking like a dry twig. “The Lullaby! But beneath the concern, a familiar spark of excitement began to flicker. A missing magical artifact? A kingdom plunged into sleeplessness? This sounded suspiciously like a puzzle. A very, very important, kingdom-saving puzzle. “Don’t fret, Papa,” she said, trying to inject a note of calm into her voice, which, due to a recent incident involving a particularly stubborn Rubik’s Cube and a bowl of porridge, still had a slight tendency to wobble. “We’ll find it. I’m sure it’s just… misplaced.”
